Muscat: The Oman Under-17 national football team will play a crucial preparatory game against Russia on Wednesday as part of the team’s warm-up plan for the AFC U17 Asian Cup which will be scheduled in Saudi Arabia during April 3-20, 2025. The friendly match will take place at Al Rustaq Sports Complex and the encounter will start at 10 pm.
Three more other key friendly games are scheduled for the junior Red Warriors this month as the team will duplicate another match against Russia on Friday at the same venue. The other two encounters are fixed against Vietnam on March 25 and 28 and the venue will be decided later.
Wednesday's warm-up game against Russia will be a real challenge for the national team boys of head coach Anwar al Habsi as the opponent is one of the strong developed junior teams in the world. The Russian team features many top skilled players and the Oman team boys will get the chance to have a tough competition and test their skills and performance ahead of their challenge in Asian assignment.
Coach Anwar will give the chance to many players in this friendly match and will evaluate the players physical and tactical performance to ensure their readiness for their Asian event.
Oman will vie in the AFC Asian Cup besides Iran, Tajikistan and North Korea in Group D while the hosts, Saudi Arabia, will play against Uzbekistan, Thailand and China in Group A. Asian heavyweights Japan will compete against Australia, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates in Group B, while North Korea will take on Yemen, Afghanistan and Indonesia in Group C. The 16 qualified teams for the Asian Cup are divided into four groups, with the two top teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinal stage. The AFC U-17 Asian Cup will act as a qualifier for the Fifa U17 World Cup Qatar 2025, which will feature eight Asian teams for the first time at the newly expanded 48-team annual tournament.
The junior Red Warriors are undergoing a domestic camp in Al Musannah as they started their training sessions on Sunday. The team will continue their warm-up sessions until end of the holy month of Ramadhan as the team will travel later to Saudi Arabia for the Asian event. Oman will target to reach further in the knockout stage of the Asian championship.
