Muscat: To mark Ramadhan, many landmarks and buildings across Oman are decked up with lights and decorations reflecting the cheer and spirit of one of the holiest events in thee Islamic calendar.

Carnivals of bright colours alongside the catchphrase of Ramadhan Mubarak are ubiquitous in all cities and villages across the country. Ramadhan Mubarak (a special felicitation on the advent of Ramadhan exchanged amongst Muslims and even non-Muslims) adorns all corners with eye-catching shapes and colours. One can see the phrase everywhere scripted in all variants of Arabic calligraphy, on bridges, gateways, green spaces and along the roads drawn by lights or a mixture of geometric shapes beside the stars and the Ramadhan crescent and drawings inspired by Arab and Islamic heritage.

It’s a unique pleasure to enjoy watching Ramadhan decorations when travelling at night or upon returning from office after a tiring working day. Pedestrians can feel an atmosphere of comfort when walking down the streets; and the colours and decorations add more pleasure as many people have the habit of walking streets and walkways after performing Taraweeh at mosques, an experience associated with Ramadhan and constitutes one of the many joys of this beloved month.

Azzan al Habsi said: 'The Ramadhan atmosphere is different and many people go out at night to walk, shop and visit. This year, decorative lights, beautiful phrases and geometric shapes inspired by Islamic heritage adorn many bridges, roundabouts and heritage landmarks in Muscat bring joy and happiness to passersby.'

Omar al Ameri said the atmosphere is different this year with the presence of decorative lights and lanterns. 'Decorations and lights reflect the spirituality of the holy month, the atmosphere becomes more joyful than before.'

Mohsen Mahmoud Hassan said the Ramadhan nights are cooler and conducive to group Iftars outside and the decorations, lights and lantern add to the vibes. 'It has been almost a week since Ramadhan and the atmosphere is getting more beautiful. With every night trip with the family to the markets or visits, we enjoy the beautiful lights that we pass by on most of the roads in Muscat.'
