Oman Olympic team back in action for West Asian Championship

MUSCAT: The newly appointed head coach of Oman Olympic team, Badar al Maimani, announced the new squad of Oman Olympic team, who will represent the team in their upcoming assignment at the West Asian U23 Championship to be hosted in Muscat during March 19 to 25.

The team returned to action after a long absence of 15 months as the last appearance was in September 2023 during the AFC Under-23 Asian qualifiers in Jordan. The team will begin the opening domestic preparatory camp on Saturday that will run until March 17. Coach Badar opted 26 players for the team’s squad including many faces from junior national teams.

The squad included: Jawad al Azi, Osama al Mahruqi, Khalid al Sulaimi, Sameer al Hatmi, Osama Bait Sameer, Adnan al Mushefri, Rashad Abdulhameed, Yassar al Balushi, Abdul hadi al Manwari, Mazin al Harrasi, Mohammed al Maamari, Oadi al Manwari, Faisal al Hadidi, Abdullah al Jabri, Salim al Abdali, Naif Faraj, Turki Abdullah, Sultan al Marzooq, Abdul Aleem al Rawahi, Ali al Balushi, Ziyad al Rasbi, Masoud al Bahri, Nasser al Saqri, Abdulaziz al Saqsi, Ahmed al Farsi and Loqman al Jadidi.



Eight teams will vie for the title of West Asian tournament and all the teams are distributed into four groups. Hosts Oman and Saudi Arabia are grouped in Group A while Bahrain and the UAE are clubbed in Group B. Syria and Lebanon teams are in Group C while Jordan and Kuwait form Group D. All the teams will play one match in quarterfinals and the winners from each group will advance to the semifinal. The teams who lose their match will play for the position matches from third to eighth place.

Oman team will commence their campaign on March 19 with a match against Saudi Arabia at Seeb Stadium and the match will kick off at 11:30 pm while Bahrain will meet UAE in the same stadium and the match will begin at 8:30 pm.

At Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Jordan will take on Kuwait at 8:30 pm while Syria will face Lebanon at 11:30 pm.

Last year, Oman hosted the 10th edition of West Asian U16 Championship at Al Saada Sports Complex in Salalah.
