Shell launches Oman's first hydrogen fuel station

 
Muscat: Shell Oman launched the first green hydrogen vehicle fueling station on Monday, situated near Muscat International Airport.

The station with a production capacity of up to 130 kilograms of hydrogen fuel per day and will provide comprehensive services including fast charging units for electric vehicles, and traditional fuel-filling options.

Eng. Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, stressed the importance of this initiative, which represents the first green hydrogen vehicle supply station in the Sultanate of Oman, and is an important step towards sustainability and diversification of energy sources.

It also reflects the government’s commitment to implementing the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to make the Sultanate of Oman a leading center in the field of green hydrogen and an important step towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

He said that the project is based on integrating renewable solar energy, local hydrogen production, advanced mobility technologies, and the great potential of hydrogen systems to attract investments and support future technologies.

Walid Hadi, Shell Country Manager in Oman, stressed that the project is the result of cooperation with Mwasalat and Nama Power and Water Supply Company, highlighting the importance of partnerships in accelerating the transition to sustainable energy solutions.

Eng. Bader bin Mohammed al Nadabi, CEO of Mowasalat, said that the company will add 15 hydrogen-powered vehicles to its fleet, noting that the project represents a qualitative shift in the transportation sector dedicated to using environmentally friendly vehicles, as we provide dedicated and distinguished transportation services in partnership with public and private sector institutions.

Ahmed bin Salem al Abri, CEO of Namaa Power and Water Procurement, explained that the company will provide 7,000 international renewable energy certificates to Oman Shell over the next five years until 2029, at a rate of 1,400 certificates annually. 250,000 international renewable energy certificates have been sold to the local market so far, and more than 3 million international renewable energy certificates will be offered in 2025.

Dr. Mohammed bin Mahmood Al Balushi, CEO of Shell Marketing Company, emphasized the role of renewable energy in accelerating the transition towards sustainable mobility, noting that the launch of the first green hydrogen station in the Sultanate of Oman is an important achievement that reflects the company’s commitment to the energy sector’s transformation journey. It demonstrates the ability of green hydrogen to enhance the mobility sector and lay the technical foundation for a flexible, low-carbon transportation system.

The green hydrogen transportation station is a new step in developing the green hydrogen infrastructure in the Sultanate of Oman, supporting the goals of diversifying energy sources and reducing carbon emissions.
