The Omani Human Rights Commission (OHRC) and the Children First Association (CFA) launched an awareness programme on children’s rights with the slogan ‘Values and Belonging’ under the auspices of Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education, in Muscat on Monday.
The programme targets multiple segments of society to include students, parents, social activists, psychologists and child protection committees.
Her Highness Sayyidah Dr Mona bint Fahd al Said, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at SQU, said in her speech: “The launch of the programme is the implementation of the common visions and goals of OHRC and CFA to develop childhood, consolidate authentic Omani national values, and enhance the necessary means of protection for children’s rights in light of social and international changes.” She also highlighted CFA’s five-year strategic plan 2021-2025 that works to raise awareness, develop and empower children in the educational, health and cultural fields and enhance their rights to be an active individual in society. It also included within its strategic directions the creation of a cultural environment that enhances the concepts of citizenship and identity and preserves the values of citizenship.
Dr Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), said that the awareness programme is an important step towards achieving an educational and cultural environment that enhances the values of citizenship, belonging and responsibility among future generations.
The Chairman said that within the framework of Oman Vision 2040, great attention was paid to ‘Human and Society’, which focuses on strengthening national identity and active citizenship. The Commission was entrusted with the task of instilling these values in the younger generations, informing them of their rights and duties, and consolidating the principles of responsible citizenship, which contributes to building a strong and cohesive society capable of achieving the sustainable development that the Sultanate of Oman aspires to.
He also expressed that investing in children is an investment in the future, because today's child will be a responsible citizen tomorrow. Therefore, this programme is not just a temporary initiative, but rather part of a broader national strategy aimed at promoting a culture of human rights.
The cooperation programme comes to confirm the desire of the two parties to define a framework for coordination and joint cooperation, which contributes to promoting human rights, which includes the exchange of knowledge. A number of programmes will also be implemented this year.
“The Commission monitors violations related to children’s rights through field visits, in addition to media follow-up by monitoring newspaper reports, television channels and social media to identify any issues related to human rights,” said Shatha bint Abdul Majeed al Zadjali, OHRC’s Director of the Organizations and International Relations Department.
