MUSCAT: “Dare to dream and take calculated risks. Leadership is about turning challenges into opportunities and inspiring others to see the potential in every problem,” says Said Abdul Ghafoor Saif Udeen, CEO of Star Drones. In a candid interview with the Observer, Udeen shared invaluable leadership insights drawn from his journey of turning a bold vision into reality. His story is a masterclass in resilience, innovation, and the art of empowering teams to achieve greatness, offering a roadmap for aspiring leaders navigating the complexities of modern business.
FROM PASSION TO PURPOSE
Udeen’s rise to CEO began with a deep passion for aviation, electronics, and design. “My journey to becoming a CEO has been a blend of passion, persistence, and curiosity,” he said. Starting as a Database and Marketing Executive for Mercedes-Benz, he honed his skills in precision and innovation before transitioning into the creative world as a Senior Digital Artist. However, it was his love for aviation that ultimately led him to found Star Drones. “Founding Star Drones was a way to bring my vision of combining art, engineering, and innovation to life, turning dreams into tangible solutions,” he explained.
LEADING THROUGH CHALLENGES
Udeen’s leadership journey has been marked by significant challenges, from securing funding in a capital-intensive industry to navigating complex regulatory landscapes. “Funding our research and development was one of the toughest hurdles,” he admitted. “Regulatory challenges also tested our resolve, requiring constant dialogue with authorities to ensure compliance.” Yet, Udeen’s ability to turn obstacles into opportunities has been a hallmark of his leadership. “By forming partnerships, nurturing local talent, and staying true to our commitment to innovation, we turned these obstacles into stepping stones toward our success,” he said.
EMPOWERING TEAMS TO INNOVATE
At the heart of Udeen’s leadership philosophy is a commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and teamwork. “I see my role as more than just leading; it’s about inspiring,” he shared. “At Star Drones, we thrive on a culture of innovation and teamwork. I believe in leading by example—showing my team that no task is too small and no dream is too big.” This approach has not only driven the company’s success but also empowered its employees to push boundaries and achieve their full potential. “Empowering them with trust, providing them with the tools they need, and celebrating their successes keeps the spark alive,” Udeen added.
A LEGACY OF NATIONAL PRIDE
One of Udeen’s proudest achievements is the creation of TARIQ, Oman’s first fully designed and manufactured drone. “TARIQ is not just a drone; it’s a symbol of what’s possible when passion meets perseverance,” he said. “Seeing a product crafted entirely by Omani hands soar through the skies is an indescribable feeling.” This achievement embodies Udeen’s vision of combining innovation with national pride, positioning Oman as a contender in the global tech race. “These milestones reaffirm our mission to position Oman on the global map of innovation,” he noted.
ADVICE FOR ASPIRING LEADERS
Udeen’s advice to the next generation of CEOs is both practical and inspiring. “Invest in continuous learning, as the world of technology doesn’t wait for anyone,” he urged. “Most importantly, align your vision with a purpose and never forget the impact you can make on your community and beyond.” He emphasised the importance of resilience and adaptability in leadership, urging aspiring CEOs to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. “Leadership is about turning challenges into opportunities and inspiring others to see the potential in every problem,” he said.
BALANCING LEADERSHIP AND WELL-BEING
Udeen also stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “Balance, to me, comes from perspective,” he shared. “As much as I love leading and innovating, I remind myself of the importance of stepping back, reflecting, and recharging.” Whether it’s spending time with family or flying for leisure, these moments of respite are crucial for sustaining long-term success. “Growth as a leader comes from understanding that personal well-being is key to sustaining professional success,” he said.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Looking ahead, Udeen envisions Star Drones as a global leader in drone innovation, with Oman at the forefront of this technological revolution. “My vision is bold yet simple: make Star Drones a global leader in drone innovation while helping Oman become a technological hub,” he said. The company is already working towards building a state-of-the-art drone manufacturing facility in Oman to meet global demand. “The future lies in AI-driven drones, modular designs to reduce waste, and sustainable solutions that redefine industries like agriculture, logistics, and environmental monitoring,” Udeen added.
