When the sounds of war echoed through her homeland, Marina Marchenko packed her life into a suitcase and set off for the sunny, unfamiliar shores of Oman. Two years later, the Ukrainian art director and photographer is not just surviving but thriving - transforming

lives through her lens and inspiring Omani women with her empowering project, MagnifyMe Photography.

Marina’s story begins with a leap of faith. “My best friend already lived in Oman, so when the war began, I knew we needed to leave. Moving to Muscat was a leap into the unknown, but I have no regrets,” she shares. A seasoned art director with over 13 years of international experience, she now channels her creative energy into MagnifyMe, a phototherapy initiative that helps women and teens embrace their true selves.

Her journey as a visual storyteller has been deeply influenced by Eugene H Johnson, a distinguished photographer known for documenting Oman’s history and culture. His seminal work, Reflections from the Not So Distant Past in Oman, a two-volume set published in 2021, captures the resilience, struggles, and spirit of Oman’s people before the Renaissance in 1970. “Johnson’s ability to narrate Oman’s history through monochrome photography has profoundly shaped my perspective. His work has inspired me to tell meaningful stories through my own lens,” Marina says.

At the heart of MagnifyMe is the belief that photography can be a transformative experience. Marina’s sessions go beyond traditional portraiture, combining professional photography with personalised guidance on body language and self-presentation.

“It’s about creating a safe space where women can explore who they are without judgment,” she explains. “These sessions help them gain self-awareness, confidence, and a deeper appreciation of their inherent beauty.”

For Marina, photography is more than just capturing images — it’s a way to reflect inner strength and resilience. “Watching women light up as they see themselves in a new light is the most rewarding part of my work,” she says. She dreams of expanding the project by collaborating with schools and women’s groups in Oman to reach more individuals who could benefit from this transformative experience.

Her love for Oman extends beyond her professional work. She is captivated by the country’s untouched landscapes and rich traditions. “Oman feels authentic in a way I’ve never experienced elsewhere. The pride and tradition of the people here inspire me to slow down and appreciate the details.”

Marina’s admiration for Oman’s culture has also sparked her next big project: a book capturing the stories of women from Oman’s hidden villages. “Time is changing quickly, and I want to preserve the wisdom of older generations. These stories will inspire younger generations while honoring the resilience of Omani women.”

However, working in Oman comes with unique challenges. Many women prefer not to have their photos shared publicly, a tradition Marina deeply respects. “While much of what I capture remains private, it’s an opportunity to focus on the stories, emotions, and essence of the people. This approach highlights the depth of Omani culture in a different way.”

Marina’s journey as an artist has been shaped by resilience and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage. The war in Ukraine heightened her awareness of the importance of preserving stories. “Every story I capture balances personal and cultural narratives, showing the humanity in every frame,” she says.

Her work has also brought moments of connection that stay with her. From being welcomed into a stranger’s home after admiring a door to being invited by women in traditional dress to their hidden village, Marina treasures these simple yet profound interactions. “These small gestures open the door to unforgettable experiences,” she says.

Marina hopes to share the country’s unique beauty with a global audience through exhibitions and projects. “Photography has the power to connect people across cultures. I want my work to inspire others to appreciate Oman’s heritage.”

From the wreckage of war to the vibrant landscapes of Oman, Marina’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of art to heal and connect. Her work not only celebrates the beauty of Oman but also uplifts the women who call it home.
