Oman chess body honours age-category champions

The winners of the Oman Individual Chess Championship for Age Categories.

The Oman Chess Committee (OCC) celebrated the winners of the Oman Individual Chess Championship for Age Categories, held in the entertainment hall of the National Teams Affairs Department at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex from January 23 to 26, 2025. A total of 87 players, both male and female, from various clubs across Oman participated in the event.
The award ceremony was attended by Jaber al Shabibi, Director of the National Teams Affairs Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth, as the event’s patron, along with Muslim al Wadhahi, an OCC member, other committee members, and parents of the players. The championship was conducted in a seven-round Swiss system format, with each player given 60 minutes and an additional 30 seconds per move.
In the various age categories, participants achieved outstanding results. In the Under-8 category, Zaan al Maamari from Salalah Club claimed first place, winning the championship trophy and the gold medal. Anas al Lamki from Masirah Club secured second place and the silver medal, while Ahmed al Jabri from Nakhal Club took third place with the bronze medal. In the Under-10 category, Amjad al Riyami from Salalah Club won first place and the championship trophy along with the gold medal. Yousuf al Maawali from Masirah Club secured second place with the silver medal and Anas al Balushi, also from Masirah Club, took third place with the bronze medal.
In the Under 12 category, Ayoub al Riyami from Oman Club claimed first place, earning the championship trophy and the gold medal. Ilyas al Hinai from Salalah Club came in second, winning the silver medal, while Shehab al Jabri from Nakhal Club finished third with the bronze medal. In the Under 14 category, Ahmed al Balushi from Masirah Club secured first place, winning the championship trophy and the gold medal. Al Muayyed al Bariki from Salalah Club came in second, earning the silver medal, while Ammar al Maawali from Masirah Club finished third with the bronze medal. In the Under-16 category, Waddah al Sabti from Masirah Club claimed first place, earning the championship trophy and the gold medal, while Mohammed al Riyami from Nakhal Club came in second, taking the silver medal.
Muslim al Wadhahi expressed his happiness with the success of the Oman Individual Chess Championship for Age Categories, highlighting the wide participation and competitive level displayed by the players. He added, 'We are proud of the objectives achieved by this championship, as it has contributed to discovering promising young talents in chess. We look forward to supporting and developing their skills to represent the Sultanate in international arenas. We also value the role of clubs and parents in encouraging players to participate and promoting a chess culture in Omani society.'
Al Wadhahi emphasised that the committee remains committed to organising tournaments and events that contribute to advancing chess, focusing on age categories as the foundation for developing the sport in Oman.
Additionally, the Oman Chess Committee announced its continued preparations for the Oman Individual Women’s Championship, scheduled from January 30 to February 2.
