BARKA: Khazaen Economic City in South Al Batinah Governorate has become a vital player in Oman’s food security strategy, with 37 local and international food security projects established by the end of 2024. These projects represent a total investment of RO 164 million ($427 million) and aim to enhance self-sufficiency while reducing dependency on food imports.
Eng Salem bin Sulaiman al Dhahli, CEO of Khazaen Economic City, highlighted the “Food City” project as a flagship initiative. “Food City is designed to develop food security infrastructure, attract investment, and establish Oman as a regional leader in food production and export,” he stated.
The 'Silal' central market for vegetables and fruits is another key initiative, serving as a global platform for marketing, distributing, storing, and exporting Omani agricultural products. These projects, part of Oman’s broader economic diversification efforts, integrate food production, logistics, and supply chain management to achieve operational efficiency and reduce waste.
Several partnerships with local and international investors have accelerated Khazaen’s progress. The Yasmina Al Sharq project, for instance, is the largest food manufacturing hub in the region, focusing on innovative production processes. Other significant projects include:
Omani Bio-Products: Specializing in animal feed and aquatic life production. Salalah Mills Company: Producing baked goods and frozen foods. Zircon Food Industries: An integrated facility for refining, sorting, and packaging rice, sugar, and spices. Modern Gulf Trading and Marketing Company: A key player in food and beverage production. Sun Age: Focused on juices and beverages.
Faisal Al Rashdi International Projects: Oman’s first factory for fresh and frozen healthy meals.
The CEO emphasised that Khazaen Economic City’s strategic focus on attracting food industry investments will position it as a regional hub for food security. “By fostering partnerships and enhancing supply chains, Khazaen is advancing Oman’s capability to achieve food self-sufficiency while supporting value-added exports,” Al Dhahli said.
With its expanding portfolio, Khazaen is set to play a pivotal role in bolstering Oman’s food production capabilities, reducing reliance on imports, and contributing to the national economy. — ONA
