The Traditional Horse Festival commenced in the Wilayat of Saham
SAHAM: The Traditional Horse Festival commenced on Friday in the Wilayat of Saham, Al Batinah North Governorate.
Organised by the Saham Equestrian Committee in collaboration with the Oman Equestrian and Racing Federation and supervised by the Saham Wali’s Office, the festival was held under the auspices of Shaikh Suba’a bin Hamdan al Saadi, Secretary-General of the Secretariat-General of National Celebrations.
Shaikh Dr Sultan bin Abdullah al Battashi, Wali of Saham, highlighted the significance of the festival in promoting heritage, tourism, culture, and social and economic development. He emphasised the role of horses in Oman’s cultural heritage and their contribution to reinforcing national identity. The event also serves as a tourist attraction, showcasing equestrian skills and drawing visitors from various governorates.
Dr Abdulaziz bin Saud al Maamari, Chairman of the Saham Equestrian Committee, noted that this year’s festival features over 118 male and female riders from across Oman. The event celebrates traditional horse sports and showcases participants' remarkable skills through diverse activities.
The festival’s programme included artistic performances on horseback. The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) music band and folk art groups added vibrancy to the event. Other highlights included a pony race for children, a horse show, equestrian skills displays, a horse hypnosis segment, and a grand closing ceremony.
