Himam Trail Race to have over 1,000 runners
MUSCAT: The organising committee of the Himam Trail Run Race, which has become the largest event of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, will launch its fifth edition from December 5 to 7.
The race is a prominent sporting event in the region, attracting wide participation from various parts of the world, with over 1,000 runners representing 65 countries.
More than 40 per cent of the participants come from outside the Sultanate of Oman, reflecting the growing international significance of this exceptional event. The races will span three challenging routes of 110 km, 55 km and 20 km, designed to challenge runners and showcase their physical and mental abilities in rugged mountainous terrain.
The races will cover four wilayats in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah: Nizwa, Izki, Al Hamra and Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, with runners passing through stunning landscapes and diverse terrains that combine mountains, valleys and lush farms, offering a unique experience.
To engage the broader community, the event will feature a series of fun and kids runs on December 6 and 7, 2024. These races, ranging from one to ten kilometres, aim to promote a culture of health and fitness among all age groups, including school students. An accompanying five-day exhibition will also highlight small and medium enterprises that are integral to the event's sports and tourism theme, further fostering local economic growth and community engagement.
The event is held in partnership with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. The Himam Trail Run Race aims to achieve several goals, not only in sports but also in supporting tourism and the local economy.
It is expected to contribute to promoting sports tourism in the Sultanate of Oman by attracting visitors and athletes from around the world, enhancing tourism activities, and showcasing the beauty of Oman's environment.
The race seeks to support the local economy by creating temporary job opportunities and activating commercial activities in the hosting wilayats. Event sponsors include the gold sponsor, Petroleum Development Oman, the silver sponsor, Golden Tulip Nizwa Hotel, and the bronze sponsor, Sohar Aluminium, emphasising their commitment to supporting these sports and tourism events.
