Omani wins Excellence Award in environmental activism

MUSCAT: Dr Thuraya bint Said al Saririyah has received the Arab Women Excellence Award in its fourth session, in appreciation of her distinguished contributions in the field of environmental activity at the level of Arab countries, and her continuous efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainability.

Dr Thuraya, who is currently the Assistant Director General for Nature Conservation at the Environment Authority, has represented the Sultanate of Oman in many meetings and councils, including the International Coordinating Council for Man and Biosphere Reserves of Unesco, a natural expert among the Sultanate of Oman’s experts in the Unesco World Heritage Committee, and the Chair of the Specialised Group of Plant Experts for the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

She chaired several national teams, most notably the technical team for preparing the development of the environmental strategy in the Sultanate of Oman, the head of the technical team for the national initiative to plant 10 million trees, and the head of the supervision and governance team for participation in the 29th Climate Summit. She also contributed to the completion of a number of projects in declaring nature reserves and preparing national reports related to nature conservation. — ONA
