MUSCAT: The Oman national under-17 football team is all set to kick off their AFC U-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers in Group J in Singapore, starting on Wednesday and running until Sunday.

Oman’s boys aim for a strong start as they will take on hosts Singapore on Wednesday. Following that, they will face Guam on Friday, before concluding the group stage against Tajikistan on Sunday. All matches will be held at Bishan Stadium in Singapore, the venue for the qualifier matches.

Bishan Stadium, one of Singapore’s main stadiums, hosts the national team’s games and has a capacity of over 3,500 spectators. The stadium is located just 12 kilometres from the national team’s accommodation at the hotel.

Oman’s junior stars are aiming to revive their past glory, having won the Asian Cup titles twice in 1996 and 2000, and having qualified for the Fifa U-17 World Cup three times: in 1995 in Ecuador (finishing fourth), 1997 in Egypt, and 2001 in Trinidad and Tobago. The junior Red Warriors are participating in the Asian Cup for the 11th time, aiming for their 12th appearance in this prestigious continental event.

Upon their arrival on Saturday, under the guidance of national coach Anwar al Habsi, the team began their daily training sessions to adapt to the local weather conditions. The warm-up session, lasting an hour, started with a speech from the head coach, emphasising the significance of this Asian assignment. He urged the players to give their utmost effort to secure the team’s goal of qualifying for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia next year.

Following the warm-up, the players went through recovery exercises after the long journey and engaged in tactical drills on the pitch at Geylang Training Centre. Training sessions will continue on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the opening game against Singapore on Wednesday.

Oman are placed in Group J alongside Tajikistan, Guam, and hosts Singapore. Oman’s junior stars are working hard to secure a place in the finals, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia from April 3 to 20, 2025.

All 10 group winners, along with the five best-placed runners-up, will qualify for the 20th edition of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup. Saudi Arabia, two-time winners (1985, 1988), have already qualified as hosts of the finals for the second time, after 1992.
