MUSCAT: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, is implementing the Agricultural Cities project as part of the government’s efforts to achieve food security and economic sustainability. The Agricultural Cities project is part of the national and regional urban strategy and aims to realise agricultural sustainability by using advanced technologies such as hydroponics, aeroponics, fish farming, developing a sustainable agricultural infrastructure and increasing local production.

Saud bin Ali al Farsi, Director of the Agricultural Cities Project, said that the Ministry is evaluating three main sites to implement the project in the Wilayat of Saham in Al Batinah North Governorate, Al Dhahirah Governorate, and the Al Najd area in the Wilayat of Thamrait in Dhofar Governorate. The evaluation covers aspects related to the land, water availability, climate compatibility as well as the strategic location which enhances economic integration and seamless transportation of agricultural products.

In the first phase, two sites were identified and selected to develop the detailed plan for two agricultural cities in Saham and Al Najd. The agricultural city project in Saham was assigned to Surbana Jurong Company, while Dar Al Handasah Company will take over the agricultural city in Al Najd, Al Farsi said.

Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of Al Batinah North, said that the governorate is witnessing increasing interest in agricultural city projects, including the agricultural city project in Saham. The project is aimed at developing the agricultural sector and enhancing sustainability and social welfare in line with Oman Vision 2040, which focuses on economic diversification.
