Al Durrah project to transform Al Khabourah’s historical centre
Suhar: An ambitious Marine life development project, 'Al Durrah,' which has embarked in Al Batinah North Governorate, in Al Khabourah aimed at transforming the historical centre of Al Khabourah Suq into a thriving hub for cultural tourism and urban development. This project reflects a forward look vision to boost heritage tourism while modernising the local infrastructure and promoting economic sustainability in the area.
The project includes a range of developments such as a fish market, a vegetable market, a tourist visitor centre, Al Khabourah Fort and its square, a fabric market, a handicraft training centre, an urban women’s centre, a hotel, parking areas, restaurants and cafés. In the first phase, 95 commercial shops, 15 fish stalls, 10 restaurants and cafés, two handicraft training centres, a tourist visitor centre, a marina for fishing boats, and a hotel will be constructed.
A key feature of the project is the marina area, which will include heritage markets, walking paces, a coastal road, gathering spaces, and a floating walkway. The total cost of the project’s first phase is about 9.8 million Omani Riyals. This substantial investment demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and driving sustainable economic growth in the governorate. Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of Al Batinah North, emphasised that the project is in line with Oman’s Vision 2040, aiming to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development across the country. He noted that the Al Durrah project will revitalise Al Khabourah’s rich heritage and strengthen its cultural identity.
Yousef bin Hassan Balhaf, the Wali of Al Khabourah, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting that it will enhance the town’s role as a key commercial hub on Oman’s coastline. The development of the historical centre is expected to further drive economic growth and prosperity in the coming years. He stated, “This project reflects a bold vision to develop urban facilities and enhance heritage tourism in the town.
“This development is expected to create 372 direct jobs and 750 indirect jobs, contributing significantly to cultural and economic sustainability while opening up new investment opportunities.Khalid al Saeedi, a citizen from Al Khabourah expressing his gratitude for such ambitious project that is like a dream will come true, “this project would create new job opportunities, improve our quality of life, boost local tourism, and attract more investments to the area.
He added, “The people of Al Khabourah are proud of this achievement, and we are confident that this project will lead to further progress that is part of the national urban development strategy, which focuses on enhancing agricultural industries, boosting marine life, promoting heritage tourism, and improving the local agricultural environment.”
