Sultan Qaboos University Hospital celebrates World Pharmacy Day
MUSCAT: The Sultan Qaboos University Hospital's Department of Pharmacy held a special event under the patronage of Dr Suhaim bint Salem Al Sinani, CEO of Medical City to celebrate World Pharmacists Day on September 25.
This year's theme, ‘Pharmacists Meet Global Health Needs,’ emphasised the vital role pharmacists play in healthcare worldwide.
The celebration saw participation from various hospital departments, including Medical Supplies, Purchasing, and Radiology and Molecular Imaging. The pharmacy divisions - External and Internal Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, Solution Preparation and Sterilisers, and Drug Inquiries and Warehousing - also actively engaged in the event. The occasion highlighted the pharmacist’s crucial role within the healthcare system as a primary source of health advice and care, reinforcing their status as integral to addressing the community's health needs.
Pharmacist Haitham Al Balushi, Head of the Pharmaceutical Dispensing Department, said: 'We are delighted to participate in World Pharmacists Day. Today, we are educating visitors about the journey medicines take before reaching patients, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality and safety.'
Tufool Al Zadjali, Head of the Pharmacy Purchasing Department, said, 'It’s an honour to participate in a day that celebrates pharmacists worldwide. We take great pride in the pharmaceutical factories that have been established in Oman, which will streamline the supply chain and ensure timely delivery of medicines. These factories will also help address any potential shortages, as seen during the Covid-19 pandemic when many hospitals faced medication shortages due to border closures. This initiative will enhance drug security and boost the national economy.'
The role of pharmacists extends beyond dispensing medicines; they ensure patients fully understand how to use medications properly, explaining dosages, potential side effects, and usage timings to provide reassurance and clarity. Their expertise is crucial in promoting the safe and effective use of medication, making them a cornerstone of healthcare.
