'Perfume in Oman' exhibition -- a celebration of art, culture, fragrance

Muscat: 'Perfume in Oman' exhibition opened at the Cultural Club on Tuesday under the auspices of Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture.

This event focuses on creativity and artistic expression, featuring contributions from a diverse group of Omani artists.

The two-day cultural event, ‘Perfume in Oman’, offers an array of enriching activities, including seminars, poetry evenings, workshops, and exhibitions.

The Fine Arts Exhibition, which will run from September 24 to October 9, is a key highlight, bringing together artists and attendees for a sensory and visual experience.

The event showcases participation of poets, writers and artists in various segments. The first symposium, coinciding with the Fine Arts Exhibition, presented four academic papers. Dr Mohammed al Balushi shared insights in his paper ‘Perfume in the Omani Archaeological Heritage’, while Dr Hussein al Mashhour explored ‘The Frankincense Trade and its Impact on the Civilisation of the Sultanate of Oman.’ Dr Jamal al Sabahi discussed 'Aromatic Plants in Oman', and Dr Fatima al Raei presented ‘The Journey of Incense Manufacturing'. This session was moderated by Qais al Siyabi.

The second symposium on Wednesday will also feature four academic papers. The poet Sama Issa will discuss ‘Perfume in Omani Myths and Folk Tales’, followed by Dr Fatima al Shaidi’s paper on ‘Perfume in Modern Omani Poetry’.

Writer Mohammed al Shahri delves into 'Perfume in the Omani Novel', while poet Younis al Busaidi explores 'Perfume in Ancient Omani Literature'. Sundus al Badri will moderate the session.

In addition to the academic discussions, the event includes poetry evenings accompanied by musical performances, featuring notable poets such as Dr Saeeda Khater, Hassan al Matroushi, Abdul Razzaq al Rubaie, Hisham al Saqri, SaId al Saqlawi, Badriya al Badri, Zahran al Qasimi and Ishaq al Khanjari. Musician Yousef al Foori will also perform, enriching the poetic and cultural atmosphere.

Several interactive workshops will take place, including sessions on incense making led by Afnan al Amri and Mawia al Jabri, and a perfume making workshop presented by Ahmed al Saqri. Additionally, a live drawing session will be conducted by artists Said al Ruwaidi and Afrah al Maamari.

On the sidelines of the event, two other exhibitions – ‘Perfume exhibition’ and ‘Perfume of colours' -- will also be held.

Professor Dr Fakhriya al Yahyaei, of Sultan Qaboos University, emphasised the importance of such events in nurturing artistic talent and fostering a connection between artists and the wider public.

“These exhibitions encourage the community to engage with artists’ works, learn about their roles and goals, and understand how art can serve and interact with different segments of society,” she noted.

Participating artist Dalila al Harthi shared her perspective on her contributions to the exhibition. 'I participated with various artistic pieces that reimagined the iconic frankincense tree in wood, showcasing its significance throughout Omani history,' she said.

The 'Perfume in Oman' event continues to shine a spotlight on the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Oman, blending tradition with contemporary expression in a celebration of scent, art and literature.
