Muscat: Ramachandran Nair, a longtime resident of Oman, is set to return to his home country, India, this week after residing in the Sultanate of Oman for nearly 35 years. Known for his avid readership of local newspapers, particularly the Oman Observer, Nair frequently contributed letters and columns throughout his time in Oman.

Having contemplated leaving Oman for the past few years, Nair finally decided that it was time to begin a new chapter. “Due to a mix of emotional reasons, the decision has been taken now. Even though it is difficult to decide, things become calm and gradual once you do,” he reflected.

Nair first arrived in Muscat Governorate in September 1990, after a stint in Mumbai, India. His Gulf career began with a memorable 12-hour bus journey to the Wilayat of Salalah where he found reminiscent of his native Kerala. Over the years, Nair worked across Oman in the wilayats of Al Buraimi and Bahla, and finally joined GAC Oman in 2001in Muscat. Over his tenure, he played a crucial role in developing the company’s Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environment (QHSSE) functions, eventually rising to the position of ‘QHSSE & Compliance Manager’.

A part from his professional contributions, Nair has always had a passion for writing and creative arts. He has penned over 9,000 letters and opinion pieces across various publications in India, Oman and the Gulf, including contributions to the BBC World’s ‘Have Your Say’ section. His creative endeavours also extended to film-making, with his short films on themes such as ageing parents and adoption gaining recognition. In 2022, he won Media City Awards for the best script and concept for his short film and musical album.

As Nair departs Oman, he plans to retire in the south Indian state of Kerala, where he intends to continue writing and engaging with the media.
