SALALAH: The 2nd Green Mobility Forum in Salalah concluded on Thursday, highlighting the latest innovations and initiatives in sustainable mobility. Organised by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, the two-day forum featured participation from specialists across Oman and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
His Highness Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar, presided over the closing ceremony, attended by dignitaries, officials, and experts in green transportation.
The forum emphasised the role of green mobility in reducing pollution and promoting sustainability while fostering cross-sector partnerships to advance strategies aligned with the Sultanate’s 2050 vision of reduced carbon emissions.
Eng Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shammakhi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology for Transport, outlined key achievements, noting the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EV) in Oman, which increased from 550 in 2023 to 1,500 in 2024, a 300 per cent surge. The government’s progress includes installing over 120 charging points for electric vehicles, with expectations of reaching more than 200 by the end of 2024 and 350 by 2027.
The Ministry also spearheaded initiatives to electrify port equipment, introduce sustainable fuel production for aircraft, and reduce emissions in data centers and communication towers. Highlighting the region's innovation, Oman launched the Middle East’s first green mobility project, the Dibba-Lima-Khasab road, using electric equipment to cut carbon emissions.
Workshops during the forum focused on promoting electric and hybrid vehicle use, building an integrated charging network, and developing advanced technologies to lower maintenance costs for electric vehicles. Additionally, a proposal for a joint GCC platform to locate charging stations was discussed, aiming to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
The forum’s workshops underscored the need for regional cooperation to advance green mobility, including innovative projects like the Green Corridors for hydrogen-powered trucks and electric bicycles for food delivery, setting a new benchmark for sustainable practices in Oman and the wider GCC. - ONA
