Al Sharqiyah South Governorate has announced the three winning designs of the Sur Monument Design Competition as part of the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2024. The competition was opened for Omani youngsters who specialised in the fields of architecture, design, visual arts, urban planning, and architectural and civil engineering.

The design of the “Convergence of Land and Sea” project won first place by engineer Maryam bint Omran al Habsiyah, whose idea embodies the heritage rooted in the convergence of land and sea.

The monument expresses the integration of the layers of sea and agricultural land, which together form the basis of the region’s heritage. The second place went to the design of the “Sur Wood” project by Ammar bin Saleh bin Abdul Rahim al Saleh, Ronaq bint Rashid al Ismailiyah, Shama bint Awad al Balushiyah and Ammar bin Abdul Hamid al Balushi, whose idea was to embody the rich history, culture and uniqueness of the shipbuilding craft, including the Ghanja and Sanbuk ships and others.

The third place went to the design of the “Sur Ghanja” project by Zainab bint Talib al Busaidiyah and Zulfi bint Hamad al Kharousiyah, whose idea was inspired by the Ghanja ship, which is one of the most famous historical ships in the city of Sur.

The competition prizes include RO 4,000 for first place, RO 2,000 for second place and RO 1,000 for third place.

Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of Al Sharqiyah South, said the announcement is aimed at affirming the governorate’s keenness to encourage innovation and creativity among young people. He added that the selection of “Sur as Arab Tourism Capital” inspires the implementation of more projects and initiatives to develop the tourism sector.

Al Maawali pointed out that the competition’s supervising committee prepared a technical guide comprising the terms to be met when designing the monument. In the first round, the names of 10 participants will be announced as qualifiers for the second round in which the jury will assess the projects. After that, the top three competitors would be felicitated as winners of the competition, he added.
