MUSCAT: In the capital Muscat, a monumental cultural project is taking shape, embodying Oman's aspirations to preserve its intellectual heritage and advance its knowledge system.
This project is the Oman Cultural Complex, which includes the National Library of Oman.
The National Library of Oman is a crucial cultural institution with a mission to collect, catalog, and organise Omani intellectual production in all its forms, whether printed or digital, and make it accessible to all segments of society.
Dr Musa bin Nasser Al Mufarji, the supervisor of the Oman National Library project, notes that the idea of establishing the Oman National Library dates back to the late 1970s.
Article 2 of Royal Decree 70/77 mandated the creation of the National Library with international standards based on technical expertise. Dr Al Mufarji emphasised that the Oman Cultural Complex project, with all its components, is of significant interest to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said (may God protect him), and it is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2028.
The National Library's mission, with its various specialisations and systems, is to safeguard Omani intellectual production in all its traditional and modern forms.
The library will house all publications about the Sultanate of Oman, including classifications, government publications, and scientific theses, as well as records from conferences and seminars discussing Oman.
The project supervisor highlighted that a dedicated team is working to collect all national intellectual output, including visits to book fairs in Doha, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Sharjah, and Tunis, among others.
The team has also visited various national libraries worldwide, including those in Korea, Singapore, Qatar, and the Mohammed bin Rashid Library, to learn from their experiences.
Designed to accommodate one million volumes, the National Library will also house electronic resources, audio-visual media, films, and maps. A dedicated children's library will be located in an independent building, featuring a variety of books, publications, games, and other child-friendly resources.
The library will include several halls for researchers and students, equipped with electronic services, and platforms for audio and visual media, enabling researchers and enthusiasts to access and utilise locally, regionally, and globally classified information.
Moreover, the library will feature sections for manuscripts and rare books, Omani and Arabian Peninsula studies, and studies related to the Imams and Sultans of Oman. It will also offer a reference service for both printed and digital encyclopedic works. - ONA
