SALALAH: The Ministry of Education's Emergency Management Strategy training programme commenced on Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Salalah Resort. The three-day event, organised by the ministry, aims to enhance the capabilities of the Central Committee for Emergency Management, heads of sub-committees in educational directorates, and general managers of the General Diwan's directorates.

The event was inaugurated by Eng Ahmed bin Mohsen Al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality. In his opening remarks, Dr Ali bin Humaid Al Jahouri, Director-General of the Directorate General of Education in Muscat Governorate and Chairman of the Central Committee for Emergency Management at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the ministry's dedication to developing robust mechanisms and systems to handle emergency situations.

Dr Al Jahouri emphasised the ministry's proactive measures, including issuing a ministerial decision on the Crisis Management Guide for schools, the formation of the Central Committee for Crisis Management, and the reconstitution of the Central Committee for Emergency Management along with sub-committees in various governorates.

He also noted the recent formation of a working group tasked with reviewing and improving procedures for managing emergency situations caused by climate conditions, aiming to refine and govern all related documents and evidence issued by the ministry.

The opening session included a comprehensive review of the Ministry of Education's emergency management strategy. This encompassed the general policy for risk management, emergency situations, the central and educational directorates' emergency management plans, and procedural guides for handling various emergencies, including weather conditions and school bus accidents.

The ministry's emergency management philosophy aligns with both the national system of the Sultanate of Oman and international best practices. This approach operates on three levels: the school level for manageable incidents, the governorate level for more significant emergencies requiring the activation of the emergency management centre, and the central committee level for mobilising additional resources to support the educational directorates.

The training programme, conducted by consultant Nasser bin Khalid Al Yaarubi from the Dara International Foundation, covered various topics, including the ministry's emergency management strategy, philosophy, and the detailed roles and responsibilities within the emergency management framework. - ONA
