Aquaculture is set to spur the growth of Oman’s fisheries sector.
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has announced the successful start of an aquaculture project in Al Seeb, Muscat Governorate, backed by a significant investment of RO 30 million. Commencing operations on March 2024, this initiative marks a crucial step towards enhancing local fish production and sustainability, aligned with Oman Vision 2040's objectives.
Led by United Fish LLC, the project utilizes a modern floating cage system across 152.15 hectares in Muscat, projecting an annual production capacity of 10,000 tonnes.
'This initiative represents a significant step forward in our strategy to enhance Oman's economic and environmental landscape,' the Ministry shared on its Twitter account. 'By integrating modern aquaculture practices, including a state-of-the-art floating cage system, we aim to boost local fish production and ensure sustainable utilization of our natural resources.”
In July 2022, the Ministry announced the signing of a contract for a substantial finfish farming project in Wilayat Al Seeb. Focusing on the cultivation of premium fish species, the first phase targets an annual production of 3,000 tons, with fingerlings bred within the floating cage system.
An onshore facility spanning 7,500 square meters hosts a fish packaging and canning plant, feed storage, equipment warehouse, and other critical support infrastructure. The investment underscores stakeholder confidence in the project's long-term viability and profitability, poised not only to contribute significantly to Oman's GDP but also to create employment opportunities and support local communities.
