Researcher brings hope to Oman’s renewable future

MUSCAT: Santrupth G R Vedanthi, a graduate in BS Energy Engineering from Pennsylvania State University (PSU), is engaged in groundbreaking research on chalcogenide perovskites, focusing on the promising material barium hafnium sulfide (BaHfS3).

His research, which is soon to be published and funded by the US government, explores the potential of perovskite materials, particularly chalcogenide perovskites like BaHfS3, to revolutionise solar panel manufacturing.

These materials offer exceptional light absorption, tunable bandgaps, and lower production costs compared to traditional silicon-based solar cells. The simpler, less energy-intensive fabrication processes of perovskites could significantly reduce solar panel costs, making them more accessible and economically viable. Santrupth highlights the benefits for Oman, a nation rich in sunlight and committed to alternative energy sources.

“Integrating perovskite-based solar panels can enhance Oman’s renewable energy infrastructure, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support sustainable development. This transition aligns with global environmental goals and boosts the local economy through job creation in the renewable energy sector, fostering energy independence,” he elaborates.

He credits Dr Nelson Dzade, Assistant Professor of Energy and Mineral Engineering at PSU, for his exceptional guidance and support in researching chalcogenide perovskite materials as part of the Material and Mineral Theory Group (MMTG).

“Working under his mentorship at this cutting-edge intersection of technology and research has been truly enlightening. I am grateful for his inspiration to push the boundaries of innovation,” says Santrupth.

Santrupth is now heading to California to pursue his MBA at California State University. He plans to enter the fields of energy investing and business development, aiming to further his impact on the renewable energy sector.
