Students from across Oman will appear for their diploma exams during this month. This is a critical phase that influences their future college choices and career path.

This period understandably brings significant stress for students and their parents, who wish the best for their children's future. While mild anxiety can motivate students to study and prepare, for some, anxiety reaches levels that can severely impact performance.

Symptoms such as excessive sweating, voice trembling, difficulty thinking and prolonged zoning out under stress can dominate and hinder even well-prepared students.

Dr Hamad al Sinawi, a senior consultant psychiatrist, recommends certain tips to combat exam anxiety and to help students manage this crucial period.

“If you struggle with prioritising, managing time, or understanding the material, acknowledge the issue as the first step towards finding a solution. Seek advice from those close to you on how to handle it effectively,” Dr Al Sinawi advises.

“Remember, studying is an art you need to master for success, and exams are merely one method of assessing knowledge. Ensure you take adequate breaks to relax. Over-studying can lead to exhaustion and boredom. Group study offers many benefits. It helps you gauge your level among peers and allows practice with someone who can highlight areas for improvement,' he said.

On the exam day, have a light breakfast and avoid excessive water intake to minimise restroom breaks during the exam. If you're heading to the exam centre with peers, steer clear of negative emotions and last-minute cramming, as these can increase anxiety.

“Remember that exams are designed to assess capabilities, not to overwhelm you. Reviewing previous exams can boost your confidence,” he suggests.

He also suggests to take proper rest, avoid staying up late before the exam. Good sleep is crucial for your brain to retain what you've studied.

During the exam:

Read questions carefully and note key points for your answers. Present your knowledge in an organised and logical sequence. In practical exams, gather essential information before drawing conclusions to avoid incorrect diagnoses.

Post-exam strategy:

Avoid discussing questions immediately after the exam to prevent unnecessary stress and to stay focused on upcoming exams or to enjoy your break.

By following these steps, students can manage their diploma exams with confidence and ease, ensuring their performance reflects their true capabilities.
