The University of Technology and Applied Science (UTAS) has signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) to implement AI technology and educational methods. The MoU signings took place against the backdrop of COMEX 2024 presently underway in Muscat.

Commenting on the MoUs, Dr Huda Salim al Shoaili, Vice-President for Electronic Services and Student Systems, stated, 'We are focusing on automating manual processes and improving existing systems. We are also using data science tools like dashboards and AI algorithms to enhance system performance.”

She added, “The University of Technology and Applied Sciences is prioritizing digital e-learning platforms. AI helps improve learning and reduces the workload for teachers, such as advising students and managing exams. Our goal is to streamline these tasks, allowing educators to focus more on teaching and mentoring.'

The first MoU was signed with EnCoach, an Omani online learning platform that utilizes advanced data analytics, predictive modeling, natural language processing (NLP), personalization and recommendation engines using AI.

In remarks to the Observer, Dr Al Shoaili explained that the partnership will implement AI technology and simplify education for both students and teachers, by correcting exams and giving instant feedback to students which will replace manual correction. Additionally it provides personalized learning based on students' learning levels.

The second MoU was signed with Onsor, an Omani designer and producer of personal computers, to integrate their PC technology to UTAS infrastructure, while fostering support for local companies.

“We are part of Onsor - currently we are working with Onsor on their virtual reality machines and we are focusing on learning management systems where we focus on content, with the help of AI we do not need to create content,” said Dr Al Shoaili. “We are here to support local companies, to take care of them. We feel as a big university in Oman it's our responsibility to do so.”

UTAS also signed a MoU with Dell and Microsoft. The MoU with Dell was signed to implement new technologies in digital transformation to enhance student skills as well as the staff, supporting them to attend international conferences in the US and the UK. Microsoft will support the implementation of digital transformation for the benefit of students.

Johny Karam, Education Cloud Specialist at Microsoft, said: “This is just another milestone - a milestone that is well embarked and well built over artificial intelligence in a safe and smart approach in order to really be able to get the best for our students, faculty and staff.”
