Oman takes part in UNESCO executive board meeting

 
Paris: The Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the 219th session of the UNESCO Executive Board being held in Paris on March 13-27.

The Sultanate of Oman is represented by Dr Hamad bin Saif al Hamami, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO alongside a number of experts.

In his first speech to the UNESCO Executive Board since the Sultanate of Oman obtained its membership for the period 2023-2027, Al Hamami touched on the ongoing Palestinian crisis that is presently preoccupying the world, stressing that the Sultanate of Oman is among countries calling for the importance of taking urgent measures to end the war on the Gaza Strip and Palestine in general and the need for international law to deliver on its responsibilities to protect civilians, ensure their humanitarian needs and lift the illegal siege on Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian territories. He called on UNESCO to play its role within the scope of its activities to help the Palestinian people.

In his speech, Al Hamami stressed that the Sultanate of Oman is committed to consolidating the principles of constructive dialogue and the values of tolerance in society, especially among the youth segment who are the basic element for building the nation. He added that the Omani youth receive care and attention in all scientific, cultural and sports fields and that the Sultanate of Oman’s international tolerance and coexistence project is a good example in this regard.

The programmes adopted by the UNESCO directly affect the future of other countries and societies, especially those dedicated to addressing the environmental, social and economic challenges associated with disasters specially that the world today is in dire need of cooperation and synergy in order to mitigate the effects of disasters, he said.

Al Hamami said that one of the fruits of cooperation with the UNESCO is the inauguration by the Sultanate of Oman, in cooperation with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the latest national centre in the region for multi-hazard center which monitors predicts disasters occur and deliver information to the relevant institutions to take necessary action to mitigate the impact of disasters.

Among the policies and initiatives of the Sultanate of Oman to protect the environment at the global level is its declaration in 1989 of the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation with a deposit that has reached $1 million so far, Al Hamami said pointing out that the prize is expected to be extended during this session for another 6 years based on the positive recommendations of the external evaluator.

The 219th session of the UNESCO Executive Board discusses a number of topics most importantly reviewing the report on the implementation of the UNESCO’s programmes and budget in addition to some topics related to the areas of the UNESCO’s work in education, culture, science and communication as well as items submitted by member states and administrative and financial topics. — ONA
