Prepaid water meters unveiled earlier this week represent a significant step forward in Oman’s water management landscape, promising efficiency, transparency, and customer empowerment, according to a key official of Nama Water Services, the state-owned water utility.

Ahmed bin Saeed al Harthy, CEO of Commercial Services, emphasised the key advantages of the prepaid meter system. He highlighted that subscribers can expect prompt water supply based on their prepaid balance, with quantities dispensed within an hour of topping up. Moreover, a unique feature allows subscribers to activate water flow instantly by pressing the meter for ten seconds after refilling the balance.

The subscription process for this innovative service is streamlined through Nama Water Services' mobile application or website. Once set up, residential subscribers benefit from direct balance top-ups and receive water in convenient increments, catering to their specific needs.

This initiative represents a significant leap forward for the GCC countries, making Oman the first in the Middle East to leverage cutting-edge technology in its water services sector.

Qais al Zakwani, CEO of Nama Water Services, underscored the company's commitment to enhancing customer service through technological advancements. He emphasized that the prepaid meters, incorporating global best practices, signify a major advancement in water management.

To ensure a smooth rollout, Nama Water Services conducted a pilot phase, providing valuable insights into managing the new system and addressing potential challenges. Drawing upon successful prepaid water initiatives worldwide, the company is confident in the service's success and plans to expand it across all governorates served.

Al Zakwani highlighted the benefits of the prepaid meter system, including empowering subscribers to manage their water consumption effectively and eliminating the issue of accumulating debt. Leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology, these smart meters offer real-time usage data, allowing customers to monitor and control their consumption conveniently, he said.

Existing customers can transition to the prepaid meter system at no extra cost, while new connections incur standard fees. The system seamlessly integrates with Nama Water Services' mobile app and online portal, offering users a comprehensive platform to manage their meters electronically.
