Work on RO 520m polysilicon project to launch at Sohar Freezone today

 
MUSAT: Sohar Freezone in North Al Batinah Governorate will celebrate today, March 11, 2024, the laying of the foundation stone of a first-ever polysilicon manufacturing project with an investment of around RO 520 million. The strategically significant project is expected to launch during 2025.

The project, which will built on a 160,000 square metre site, will produce high-quality metallic silicon with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes.

Sultan bin Salem al Habsi, Minister of Finance, will preside over the foundation laying ceremony in the presence of key figures representing the investors, Sohar Port and Freezone, and other stakeholders.

The production process takes place by pouring liquid metallic silicon from the furnace into the molds, and then cooling it through molds or continuous casting. After cooling, Silicon metal grinding and packing for global export.

The project reflects the desire to continue the efforts initiated by the Sultanate of Oman to encourage local investment and attract foreign investments, as a translation of the objectives of the “Oman 2040” vision.

Dr Saleh bin Saeed Masan, Commerce and Industry Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said the industrial sector is of great importance as it is considered a locomotive that achieves comprehensive development in the Sultanate of Oman, while also catalyzing the growth of other interlinked economic sectors.

In a statement to ONA, he said the project is being developed by United Solar Company in line with the government’s Industrial Strategy 2040, which seeks to drive investments in certain industries, notably tech and knowledge-based industries that rely on research, development and advanced technology. The Strategy also seeks to enhance the deployment of high technologies and harness innovation to foster the growth of knowledge-based industries in a move to position Oman as a leading player in the industrial and technological arena.

In addition, the project will enhance the position of Sohar Port and Freezone by generating ample cargo volumes, both incoming and outgoing. It will also meet the growing demand for silicon metal in the markets of Asia, Europe and North America.
