Bidiya: Over 700 runners from around the world are taking part in the three-day Oman Desert Marathon, which kicked off in Bidiya on Saturday. The ninth edition of the marathon is part of Al Sharqiyah North Governorate’s winter festival.

After flagging off the race, Mahmoud bin Yahya al Thuhli, Governor of Al Sharqiyah North, said: “The Al Sharqiyah North Winter 2024 activities come to promote and support the tourism, investment and entertainment aspects in the governorate through the events that last more than 20 days. It will also help to support SMEs and productive families in the wilayats.”

The marathon is divided into four stages and is 165 km long. It started from the village of Al Wasil in the Wilayat of Bidiya, passing through the vast sands of Al Sharqiyah. Participants from Morocco, Spain, France, Ukraine, Italy, Germany, Poland, Britain, Belgium and Switzerland are participating in it.



Said bin Mohammed al Hajri, the general supervisor of the marathon, said that the marathon coincides with the winter season. The classic desert race is a distance of 165 km. The first stage is a distance of 42 km, the second stage 55 km, and the third stage is a distance of 47 km. The race at this stage is held at night. The fourth and final stage covers a distance of 21 km. A number of short races will be held for children. For adults and youths, the cross-country race, the half marathon race, and the marathon race, will be held. — ONA
