KAMPALA: Oman and fellow Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries on Friday denounced Israel's military campaign in Gaza and demanded an immediate ceasefire there, during the annual summit of the 120-member bloc in the Ugandan capital Kampala. Assigned by his Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Shaikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council, headed the Sultanate of Oman’s delegation at the summit. In his address to the delegates, Shaikh Al Khalili conveyed the greetings of His Majesty the Sultan to the delegates and thanked Ugandan president for hosting the summit.
'My country continually affirms its firm commitment to the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes in all parts of the globe and on the basis of the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter, in order to achieve justice, harmony, security and peace for all. From this standpoint, we affirm the steadfastness of our support for the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people to establish their state with East Jerusalem as its capital.'
He said: “We renew our call to the international community to carry out its duties in ensuring international peace and security, to stop the continuation of Israel’s brutal aggression against the Gaza Strip, and its ongoing massacres in the occupied Palestinian territories, and to hold it accountable for its flagrant violations of international law and international humanitarian law.”
In addition, he said, “We appreciate the wisdom of your choice of the slogan for this summit, entitled “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” which reflects a comprehensive vision for sustainable development and progress in various fields to ensure the well-being of peoples. We call for strengthening international cooperation and joint commitment to achieve a balance that reconciles various development and environmental requirements in a way that ensures sustainability and addresses global challenges.
Shaikh Al Khalili said Oman recognises the importance of cooperation in building partnerships, scientific research, development and exchanging experiences to achieve solidarity and social justice.
Dozens of heads of state and other senior officials from the NAM, formed officially in 1961 by countries opposed to joining either of the two major Cold War-era military and political blocs, are attending a summit in Uganda. 'Since October 7 we have witnessed one of the cruellest genocidal acts ever to be recorded in history,' Cuba's vice president, Salvador Valdes Mesa, said in a speech to delegates.
'How can the Western countries, who claim to be so civilised, justify the murder of women and children in Gaza, the indiscriminate bombings of hospitals and schools and deprivation of access to safe water and food?' he said. Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the African Union commission, called for an immediate end to what he called the 'unjust war against the Palestinian people.' — ONA with AFP inputs
