Oman participates in 43rd meeting of Arab Social Affairs Ministers Council

CAIRO: Represented by the Ministry of Social Development, the Sultanate of Oman took part in the meeting of the 43rd session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs. The meeting concluded in Cairo on Thursday.

Oman’s delegation to the meeting was led by Dr Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development.

During the three-day meeting, a decision was made to open an exceptional temporary fund to support more than 350,000 families in the Gaza Strip for a renewable period of six months.

It was also decided to hold a symposium on implementing an Arab strategy for the elderly and another on developing statistics.

The meeting also laid emphasis on regular supply of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs’ Secretariat General with updates on national strategies and plans on poverty eradication policies.

The meeting affirmed that member states agreed to exchange experiences and knowledge and to ratify the statute of the Arab Centre for Social Policy Studies and Poverty Eradication, in accordance with established systems.

The meeting discussed preparations for the 17th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, scheduled to be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 11 to 13 June 2024.

It also underlined support for rights of people with disabilities in the face of epidemics and crises, preparation for the World Summit on Disability (2025-2028), discussed and endorsed other draft resolutions that were included in the meeting’s agenda. - ONA
