A confident-looking Oman football team is undergoing a training camp in Abu Dhabi, UAE ahead of the following month’s continental showpiece of AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023.

Oman’s defender Juma al Habsi arrived in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday and joined the team camp after head coach Branko Ivankovic called him to replace Mohammed al Amri due to the latter’s injury. There are currently three key players suffering injuries including Al Mundher al Alawi who impressed in the previous edition of the Asian Cup in UAE, Amjad al Harthy and Khalid al Hajri.

The 29-man squad is gearing up under supervision of Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic. It is expected that coach Branko will implement different technical strategies and will give chances for several players in the forthcoming two friendly games against China on December 29 and against the UAE on January 6, 2024.

In the winter weather conditions, the Red Warriors players performed many training sessions during the past two days at Abu Dhabi Cricket Grounds. Ivankovic instructed the players to do different technical and tactical sessions. The players were split into two groups to conduct a match and perform some special trainings. Ivankovic is likely to address all the weak areas of the team during the last two rounds in the preliminary joint qualification especially after Oman’s defeat against Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in Bishkek last month.

The 18th edition of the Asian Cup will be held from January 12 to February 10, 2024 where 24 teams will vie for the title of the Asian event in the Fifa World Cup stadiums. Oman will compete in Group F besides Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan teams. The national team will commence their opening match against Saudi Arabia on January 16 while they will take on Thailand on January 21. The concluding match will be against Kyrgyzstan on January 25.
