Suhar : Under the auspices of Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, the Scientific Conference on World Diabetes Day 2023 was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Suhar.

The event was organised in collaboration with the General Directorate of Health Services in North Al Batinah and the Oman Diabetes Association. This annual conference, a part of the multifaceted programmes provided by the association for the community's benefit, emphasised the patient's right to comprehensive care, with the theme 'Know the Risk, Decide Your Action'.

This year's conference was a result of the fruitful collaboration between the association, the General Directorate of Health Services in North Al Batinah, and Sohar Hospital. It targeted healthcare professionals providing diabetic care in Oman, aiming to enhance their knowledge, refine their skills, and update them with the latest scientific and research developments.

Dr Nour bint Badr al Busaidiyah, Chairperson of the Oman Diabetes Association, said, 'Oman exceeded the global average diabetes rate of approximately 9.3 per cent in 2019, with an adult prevalence of around 12.4 per cent, according to the National Health Survey in 2017. Hence, concerted efforts across all concerned sectors are crucial to curb the disease's prevalence.'

The association strives to reduce the suffering of diabetic patients, improve disease management and delay complications. Through the 'We Are with You' initiative, launched two years ago, the association provided glucose monitoring devices to children, teenagers from low-income families, reducing daily insulin injections from 10 to 4 times.

The association, through community support, gathered sufficient resources, aiding over 160 patients with a budget exceeding RO 55,000. Efforts continue to expand coverage and diversify support, including insulin pump assistance.

The conference covered vital topics such as modern diabetes treatments based on global evidence, challenges of diabetes treatment in North Al Batinah, advanced care for obesity-associated diabetes, modern techniques in diabetes treatment, adolescent and youth diabetes management, best integrated insulin control, and discussions on challenging cases.

The conference also shed light on the role of social media in diabetes awareness and familiarisation with the 'We Are with You' initiative. It included three accompanying workshops covering remedial nutritional aspects for diabetic patients, education, health promotion and assessments of diabetic foot complications care.
