A riot of colours catches the attention of onlookers at Athaiba Beach in Muscat when Sultan Merza, a member of the 'Talking Birds & Free Flying Team,' lands in the beach with his macaws and other birds.

Thanks to Muscat's pleasant weather, Sultan Merza and his companions bring a flock of vibrantly coloured 'talking birds' to the beach every afternoon, delighting beachgoers. Recognising the growing interest in this unique hobby, Merza initiated a platform on social media to connect with like-minded individuals, fostering an exchange of information and knowledge crucial for the hobby's development in Oman.

Merza acknowledges the challenges faced by potential bird owners such as the lack of knowledge on taming and caring for these avian companions, along with the financial commitment required.

The 'Talking Birds & Free Flying Team' boasts over 30 macaws and various other species, imported mainly from South Africa. Since its establishment in 2017, the team has honed its members' skills, overcoming challenges related to bird taming, training and healthcare.

Beyond showcasing skills and dazzling audiences, the team aims to educate the community on proper bird care and nutrition. Merza highlights the positive impact of their volunteer activities in supporting the Sultanate's biodiversity conservation efforts and eco-tourism policies.

The team's active presence on social media has attracted a diverse audience, both Omanis and residents, fostering a community eager to explore and understand this distinctive hobby. Merza emphasises the government's efforts in preserving Oman's biodiversity, emphasising birds' importance for environmental balance.

Merza emphasises that the involvement with ‘talking birds’ extends beyond a display of skills, presenting economic opportunities for enthusiasts. Raising and importing these birds involves many formalities including a 'CITES Certificate' from the Environment Authority in line with international commitment to conservation.

While currently engaged in local events, the team aspires to expand its activities beyond Oman. Merza and his companions, with years of experience, traverse different parts of the Sultanate of Oman to introducing their birds and the hobby, hoping to strengthen people's connection with nature.

As the 'Talking Birds & Free Flying Team' continues to soar, their dedication to fostering a deep bond between people and the natural world remains a testament to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.
