Coach Anwar announces 24-man squad for West Asian football tourney

 
MUSCAT: Oman national under-15 head coach Anwar al Habsi has announced a 24-member squad for the West Asian Football Championship which will be hosted in Salalah during December 11 to 20, under West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) in coordination with the Oman Football Association (OFA). The final domestic camp of the junior team will commence on Wednesday and will run until the beginning of the ten-day tournament.

Oman boys, who on Sunday were crowned champions of Arab School Football Championship in Cairo, Egypt, will aim for another thrilling victory in this West Asian event that will be staged in the Sultanate of Oman. Oman coaching staff headed by coach Anwar al Habsi and his assistant team will eye glory in this major assignment after an outstanding display in the Arab school event. The concluding warm-up gathering will take place in Muscat and Salalah.

The hosts Sultanate of Oman, champions in 1998, will compete against Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon in Group A, while defending champions Jordan were drawn with UAE, Saudi Arabia and Syria in an exciting Group B.

Oman boys will start their campaign in the championship with a match against Lebanon on December 11 at Al Saada Stadium. The match will start at 8 pm. The opening match of Group A between Yemen and Iraq will kick off at 5 pm at the same venue.

In the following match, Oman will take on Yemen on December 13 and they will conclude their group matches against Iraq on December 15. The first two toppers from each group will advance to the semifinals and the winner in the semis will meet in the title showdown on December 20.

The Oman team lifted the Arab School title following a 1-0 victory against Lebanon in the final clash. Oman were drawn in Group B with Morocco and Lebanon teams. The Sultanate of Oman team came second in Group B with four points behind Lebanon who topped the group with four points too but with better goal difference.

The Oman boys commenced their campaign in the tournament with a 2-1 win over Morocco and then drew 1-1 against Lebanon in their second match. In the semifinals, Oman beat Egypt 1-0 while Lebanon prevailed over Libya 4-3 in penalties after 1-1 draw at full-time. In the final clash, Oman registered a 1-0 win over Lebanon to capture the title.
