MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth on Sunday began implementing a capacity-building programme in the field of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
The programme is carried out by experts from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). More than 30 young men and women interested in this field are taking part in the five-day programme.
The programme stems from the Sultanate of Oman’s efforts to activate UNESCO’s 2003 Convention on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage and an Arab Strategy to this effect undertaken by ALECSO.
Held at the premises of Scientific College of Design in Muscat Governorate, the programme seeks to raise awareness about the importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage, identifying its role in shaping cultural identity and providing comprehensive knowledge about the elements of cultural heritage and methods of documenting it. This is in addition to developing research skills, collecting information and assessing the cultural value of heritage elements.
The programme also aims to achieve the goals of the cultural strategy espoused by the ministry, notably promoting innovation in cultural development, enhancing knowledge, understanding Omani cultural heritage and encouraging participants to take part in projects to preserve cultural heritage in Omani society. - ONA
