Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has urged the mobile users to activate the voice calling experience over 4G VoLTE networks.

While VoIP uses Wi-Fi to make calls, VoLTE uses 4G LTE to transmit your voice via data packages.

VoLTE allows you to make calls using the internet while still using your phone number. This means VoLTE calls you make are considered phone minutes by your cell service provider. Your cell phone provider should support VoLTE, as most major carriers do. VoLTE will work even If the data signal is strong.

With TRA deciding to gradually stop 3G services from next year, it urged users to activate VoLTE on all devices used by them, to improve the quality of voice communication over 4G fourth generation networks.

TRA has said mobile devices limited to 3G and 2G capabilities will have to be phased as their users will be forced to upgrade their gadgets in line with the needs of telecommunication services.

TRA said its plans to stop the 3G services from July 2024 as part of the efforts to direct natural resources such as frequency band spectrum, investing in modern technologies, and focusing on offering services with better quality.

Earlier speaking to the Observer, a top TRA official had said that there is a programme in place to close 3G networks so that service providers can use 3G spectrum capacities for new technologies such as 4G and 5G.
