GCC condemns Israeli violence in Gaza

NEW YORK: The GCC countries condemned the violence in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli aggression on innocent civilians as these actions contravene the international law and the international humanitarian law and the principles set forth by the Fourth Geneva Convention adopted in 1949 which obligates Israel, as an occupying power, to protect civilians at times of war.

This came in a statement delivered by First Secretary Khalid bin Saleh al Rabkhi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman’s delegation to the United Nations in New York, on behalf of the GCC countries, within the framework of the tenth extraordinary session of the General Assembly, entitled: ‘Illegal Israeli actions in East Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory’.

The statement said that the Security Council has been unable to take any unified position for several days regarding what is happening in the occupied Palestinian territories particularly in the Gaza Strip and the aggression carried out by the Israeli occupation forces against the innocent and peaceful residents which is a matter of concern to all of us and deserves condemnation by the international community.

The statement condemned the siege, starvation, collective punishment, cutting off water and electricity supplies, and preventing access to the most basic necessities of living.

The United Nations indicates that more than 6,500 Palestinian citizens have martyred in the Gaza Strip so far, including 2,300 children, 1,200 women, and a number of international employees working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and that the numbers of injured stands at around 17,000, the statement said.

During the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, a draft resolution submitted by Jordan on behalf of the Arab Group, calling for an immediate, permanent and sustainable humanitarian truce leading to the cessation of hostilities and the provision of basic goods and services to civilians throughout Gaza immediately and without hindrance, was adopted by a majority of 120 members. — ONA
