Low-pressure 1,400 km away from Oman's coast

Muscat: The low air pressure area that has been developing over Arabian Sea is moving westward and is centered at latitude 10 degrees north and longitude 66.5 degrees east. It is about 1400 km away from the coast of the Wilayat Sadah. The wind speed estimated at the center is less than 17 knots, and it is expected to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, as per the latest weather charts and analysis of the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Center. Forecasts indicate chances of affecting the coasts of the Dhofar and Wusta Governorates and the Republic of Yemen.

The Met Office has stated that the possibility of the direct impact of this weather condition could commence on the evening of Sunday, October 22. Cloud flow and rain could be variable in intensity ranging between 100-150 mm, where as the active winds are expected to be around 20-30 knots.

The sea wave height during this period is expected to be as high as 6-7 meters on the coasts of the Arabian Sea and 2-3 meters on the coasts of the Sea of Oman, and on the forecast is possibility of sea water inundation

Otherwise Al Hajar areas continued to receive rains on Thursday. Cumulus cloud activity over the Hajar Mountains covered the areas of South Al Sharqiyah, North Al Sharqiyah, Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah, South and North Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah, and scattered rain fell on parts of the mountainous areas of Al Dakhiliyah and Muscat Governorates.

Chances of expansion of the formations are expected later and there are possibilities of rain that may range into thunderstorms at times.

There could be an impact on horizontal visibility due to down draft wind and dust rising situation.

The Civil Aviation Authority ⁧has issued an alert ‫ noting the necessity of obtaining information on weather from its official sources, specifically Oman Meteorology.

It stated, “Avoid spreading rumors and disseminating false information about tropical conditions other than what is published by the Omani Meteorology.”

The statement issued read due to the spread of rumors and the dissemination of false information regarding tropical conditions other than what is published by the Omani Meteorology Department. The Civil Aviation Authority alerts everyone to the need to obtain correct weather information and follow the weather bulletins issued by it from its official source.

The statement also said “It is prohibited to practice civil aviation activities, air navigation and meteorological services except with the approval of the competent authority.”

Article (30) - Chapter Six / Approvals - Civil Aviation Law says, “Whoever violates the provision of Article (30) shall be punished by imprisonment for a period of no less than one year and not exceeding (three) years, and a fine of no less than (15,000) fifteen thousand Omani Riyals and not exceeding (50,000) fifty thousand Omani Rials, or One of these two penalties.”

The Authority said these measures are in place for the welfare of the public.
