Salalah: For the first time since it started monitoring wildlife, the Environment Authority reported that its cameras spotted three adult Arabian leopards walking together in one of the mountains of the Dhofar Governorate.

Represented by the Arabian Leopard Conservation Project Management Team, the Environment Authority termed the precedent as rare in the world nowadays.

Those in charge of the project stressed that, over the past few decades, it was difficult to monitor Arabian leopards in the wild, due to the declining numbers of the species. This prompted the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to classify Arabian leopards as “critically endangered animals”.

The recent camera shots indicate many factors. They evidence the success of Oman’s efforts to preserve Arabian leopards. They prove the local community’s awareness and cooperation in promoting the wild life conservation approach. They also indicate the soundness of the region's ecosystem and its ecological diversity.
