Oman stun Syria to make strong start

MUSCAT, Sept 7
The Oman Olympic (under 23) football team made a strong start as they defeated Syria 2-0 in the opener of the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 Qualifiers in Amman city, Jordan on Wednesday.
At Prince Mohammed Stadium in Amman city, coach Akram Habreesh put in an excellent show to earn their first winning points in the Asian qualifiers campaign. The victory has boosted Oman players confidence ahead of the second clash against hosts Jordan on Saturday.
In the other Group A match, Jordan thrashed Brunei Darussalam 9-0. With the big win, Jordan led the group with three points with better goal difference compared to Oman, who are second with same points.
Midfielder Nasser al Rawahi broke the deadlock for Oman in the 26th minute to score the opening goal while Ahad al Mashaikhi doubled the lead in the second half at the 67th minute to confirm Oman’s victory in the opening match. Oman’s defender Said al Salami got the red card in the 70th minute as Oman were left with 10 men on the ground for rest of the match. However, the junior Red Warriors managed to tighten their defence and broke all the scoring attempts by opponents Syria.
Oman’s Nasser al Rawahi was named as the best player of the match after his top show in the fixture. He scored the first goal and assisted for the second goal as he gave a perfect pass for Ahad to score the second goal of the match.
GOOD STEP
Post the match, the experienced national coach, Akram Habreesh, expressed his full satisfaction on the team's performance. “The team deserved the win. With this triumph, we made a good step towards qualifying to the finals. Still two more matches are there to confirm the qualification,” he said.
Coach Akram stated that the opponents were strong and they were very disciplined on the field. “Our players kept their top focus and managed to keep the lead in the match. I am sure our boys will show much better performance in the forthcoming games,” he concluded.
CRUCIAL VICTORY
The best player of the match, Nasser al Rawahi, said that the team secured a crucial victory against Syria. “My team-mates performed very well during the match and captured essential points from the first match. The following match against hosts Jordan will require more focus and we are very confident to move forward in this qualifiers,” he said.
Oman will play a tight match on Saturday as they will meet Jordan in a deciding match for the group toppers. Syria will look to compensate from the first loss as they will take on Brunei on the same day. The concluding group match for Oman will be against Brunei on Tuesday.
The group toppers from 11 groups and four best second-placed teams will secure their place in the Asian finals which will be held in Doha, Qatar during April 15 and May 3, 2024.
