27,629 students admitted to higher education institutions

55.6% absorbed by government higher institutions

MUSCAT: The Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) announced the results of the first sorting of admission to higher education institutions for the academic year 2023-2024, on Wednesday.

A total of 27,629 students were admitted to higher education institutions and domestic and overseas scholarships, according to Dr Hamad bin Khalfan al Numani, Director-General of the HEAC.

The government higher education institutions absorbed 55.6 per cent of the total number students admitted whereas home scholarships took up 42.2 per cent and international scholarships accounted for 2.2 per cent of that total. The higher admission percentage is attributed to the high rates the applicants had achieved in the General Education Diploma (GED). However, 7 per cent of university seats remain vacant due to the fact that the applicant did not meet admission criteria, the official said.

The successful applicants may complete the registration procedures from Thursday (August 17) till Wednesday (August 23) through the HEAC and online without the need for students to show up in person at educational institutions.

The HEAC explained that it is possible for students admitted in the first sorting to reapply for the vacant seats from August 28 to 30 without being required to reject the opportunities obtained in the first sorting following which the HEAC will announced the vacancies for the second sorting from October 1 to 5, if any.

Dr Al Numani noted that the number of scholarship seats offered by private higher education institutions and private sector companies increased by 59.4 per cent compared to the last academic year.

He added that HEAC allowed the students to pick the educational institution and the discipline directly through the Centre for students admitted to the flexible programmes of the domestic scholarships (STEM, ESAM) at the private higher education institutions shown in the list announced by the Centre and the applicant gets a response within the first three days of the period specified for completing the registration procedures.

Dr Al Numani advised the students to follow up the updates and announcements issued by the HEAC. Regarding the students whose academic results will come after the announcement of the results of the first sorting, have to get in touch with the centre and provide the required documents knowing that they won’t miss their right to compete for the academic programmes.
