Jabal Al Akhdhar farmers gear up for pomegranate harvest season

Thanks to an integrated management programme, this year's crop promises to be abundant with over 27,000 trees and a marketing value of RO 1,727,000

 
AL JABAL AL AKHDHAR: Farmers in the Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah will begin harvesting pomegranate from August.

Statistics issued by the wilayat’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resources indicate that the number of pomegranate trees has reached more than 27,000 whereas the marketing value of the pomegranate crop stood at RO 1,727,000 during the past year.

The percentage of healthy fruits of pomegranate reached more than 90 per cent, after the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources implemented the control programme and released as many as 42.147 million parasites during 2023.

The programme is part of a project of integrated management of pomegranate fruit-sucking moth through the use of alternative means and modern control methods.



Omair bin Mohammed al Fahdi, Head of the Agricultural Development and Water Resources Department, Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, said that the average fresh fruits during the last season amounted to 88.7 per cent, and the average fruits per tree stood at estimated 55 fruits.

He added that the present season witnessed an abundant production of the crop, due to rains and the abundance of water. It is expected to witness a great turnout from visitors to Al Jabal Al Akhdhar who will come in a period that coincides with activities of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Festival 2023, he added.

It is worth noting that the pomegranate harvest season in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar is one of the unique seasons that adds more diversity in terms of tourism products and highlights elements of recreational tourism, adventure tourism, and natural and heritage tourism.

Visitors to Al Jabal Al Akhdhar will also get to enjoy learning how to harvest delicious pomegranates.
