Muhanad claims Senior Singles title at national TT meet

 
MUSCAT: Seeb’s paddler Muhanad al Balushi emerged Senior Singles National Table Tennis Championship title on Saturday. Muhanad beat his teammate and the defending Champion Asad al Raisi 3-1 in the final clash at the main hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

The three days tournament, organised by Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA), featured participation of 59 players representing 15 domestic clubs namely: namely: Ibri, Saham, Nakhal, Qurayat, Al Rustaq, Al Ittifaq, Salalah, Yanqul, Seeb, Mirbat, Al Suwaiq, Ahli Sidab, Masirah, Dhofar and Nizwa.

Sultan al Riyami from Yanqul club took the third place award as he defeated Muadh al Shehi from Saham 3-2 in the third and fourth playoff. In the semifinals, Mashal lost against Asad al Raisi 3-0, while Muhanad edged Sultan 3-1.

The champions Muhanad topped his second group in the group stage as he claimed the full mark of points from two games. He won against Said Salim Ali from Salalah club 3-0 and against Abdulhakeem al Kharousi from Ahli Sidab club 3-0.



In the last 32 round, Muhanad qualified through bai system before thrashing Al Harith al Yafei from Salalah club 3-0 in the last 16 round. Later, he won against Haitham al Mandhari from Saham club in the quarterfinals before defeating Sultan al Riyami to make it in the semis 3-1. Then, he won against Asad in the concluding game.

This year edition of the tournament featured advancing of Saham talented paddler Nasser al Zaabi who is in U15 years category. The young player impressed as he progressed into round of last 32 for the first time after he positioned as runner up in tenth group with five points. He managed to earn two victories against Khalid al Siyadi from Al Rustaq Club 3-0 and against Al Julanda al Hadhrami (Al Rustaq) with the same result. Saham’s paddler Muadh al Shehi progressed for first time as well to the semis of the Senior National Table Tennis Championship for singles category.

The local event was officiated by the international umpires while Hashim al Salmi was appointed as the chief umpire. Khalid al Zaabi was the tournament manager and Mohammed al Jassasi and Masoud al Shaqsi were in the organising committee of the tournament.

The medals ceremony will take place soon as apart of top national event.
