Fisheries wealth in Al Batinah North is an economic and ecological cornerstone

Suhar: Beyond the coastal nature of Al Batinah North Governorate, fishing is a vital part of the local economy and environment. The Fisheries Wealth Department stands as a testament to the significance of the fisheries sector in Oman's economy and ecology.

Engineer Sultan bin Hassan bin Abdullah al Marzouki, Director General of the Fisheries Wealth Department expressed the department's concern to protect and responsibly use the governorate's rich marine resources.

Fishing is an essential industry for Oman, even without relying on oil. It provides jobs and boosts the country's economy. In Al Batinah North, over 13,000 licensed fishermen work hard, using 5,325 fishing boats and 22 artisanal vessels to catch fish and seafood.

To make sure everyone gets fresh seafood, there are 735 licenses for transporting and selling aquatic products. These licenses help distribute fish to different parts of Oman and beyond.

Preserving the marine environment is vital, too. Al Batinah North has created 416 artificial coral reef sites to protect fish populations.

These reefs serve as safe homes for fish to grow and reproduce, ensuring there will always be plenty of fish for everyone.

When it comes to selling the catch, Al Batinah North boasts 9 bustling fish markets with 470 Omani traders. There are also 162 places to sell fish and seafood, making sure everyone can enjoy this delicious food.

Fishing is more than just about making money; it also helps Oman stay independent in providing food for its people. As Engineer Sultan says, 'A nation that does not eat from its own lands and seas cannot dictate its future. That's why the fishing industry in Al Batinah North is so crucial as it helps secure Oman's future and provides jobs for young Omanis.

Aligned with Oman Vision 2040, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has spearheaded a series of strategic investment projects. These initiatives aim to ensure food security and enhance the sector's contribution to the national income.

Thus the government is investing in the fishing sector to ensure food security and boost the country's income. In 2021, Al Batinah North produced over 69,000 tonnes of fish, worth more than RO48 million Omani rials. These achievements show how important fishing is for Oman's prosperity and the well-being of its people.

With strong leadership, creative thoughts and hard work, Al Batinah North is a shining example of how fishing can be a significant resource for generations to come.
