Sweet treat: Omani Halwa goes international

Muscat: Omani Halwa holds significant importance in Omani culture, particularly in terms of hospitality, symbolising generosity and warmth when hosting guests. Its consumption has grown both within Oman and internationally in recent years.

According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there were 48 Omani Halwa factories spread across all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman in 2022.

The increase in consumption can be attributed to several factors. The growth of tourism in Oman has exposed visitors to the country's rich culture and heritage, with Omani Halwa often being offered as a traditional welcome treat.

Ali bin Rashid al Abri, a halwa maker, mentioned that tourists often bring Omani Halwa back as souvenirs, contributing to its global consumption. In fact, he said that they even receive requests from tourists to ship halwa to them, hence the growing popularity and demand for the dessert.

Omani Halwa manufacturers and local businesses have actively pursued export opportunities, making it more accessible in international markets. The expansion of export channels and distribution networks has facilitated the availability and enjoyment of Omani Halwa outside of Oman.

The presence of Omani Halwa in food fairs and exhibitions, both domestically and internationally, has allowed people to sample and discover the dessert, generating interest and increasing consumption.

The widespread use of social media platforms has played a role in spreading awareness and promoting Omani Halwa. Individuals sharing their experiences, along with pictures and reviews on platforms like Instagram, have created buzz and piqued curiosity among their followers.

Omani Halwa is also deeply ingrained in Omani cultural events such as weddings, festivals, and religious celebrations. The consumption of Omani Halwa during these occasions, which attract large numbers of attendees, has further contributed to its expansion.

In response to the trend towards healthier eating, Omani Halwa manufacturers have begun offering sugar-free or reduced-sugar options, catering to health-conscious consumers who still wish to indulge in the flavours of this beloved dessert.
