GENEVA: The Gulf Cooperation Council states reaffirmed their belief in the primacy of the right to education and their unwavering commitment to ensuring access to education for all members of society, and the common goals seeking to promote this basic human right.
This came in a statement delivered by Ambassador Idris bin Abdul Rahman Al Khanjari, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and international organisations in Geneva on behalf of GCC countries, within the framework of the interactive dialogue on the report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to education in Geneva.
The ambassador explained that the GCC countries are striving to achieve equal access to education in all its stages and equality for all students, regardless of their nationality or social background, and to provide an educational environment that encourages respect for all. The Ambassador indicated that the joint cooperation of the GCC states in higher education and scientific research has embodied the vision of the leaders of the GCC states to achieve progress and development in this field, as high-level ministerial committees, educational centres, and offices have been formed that contribute to enhancing cooperation, exchanging expertise and experiences, and unifying systems.
The Ambassador expressed the pride of the GCC countries in implementing their joint initiatives, such as the Gulf Network for Quality Assurance of Higher Education, the scientific research database (Jisr), and the Education Excellence Award, which aims to raise the level of higher education and scientific research in the GCC countries.
The Ambassador said that the strategic plan for cooperation in the field of higher education and scientific research (2022-2026) constitutes an important initiative to achieve the goals of sustainable development and establish global competitiveness in higher education and scientific research, stressing the commitment of the GCC countries to achieve the goals of this strategy through policies, frameworks, and programmes that enhance cooperation and development of the educational system.
Ambassador Idris bin Abdul Rahman Al Khanjari affirmed the GCC's unwavering commitment to the right to education as a basic right that plays a fundamental role in immunising children and youth from extraneous ideas and alien to their values, and from exploitation and incitement to hatred, violence, and extremism.
It urges all parties to strengthen their efforts to achieve universal access and quality in education for all, as it represents the basis for achieving sustainable development. - ONA
