Women from Royal Cavalry set to amaze at Basel Tattoo

Women from the Royal Cavalry of Oman are poised to create a sensation at the highly anticipated 2023 Basel Tattoo.

These remarkable female equestrians and guards have been invited to showcase their exceptional talents and cultural heritage on the prestigious stage.

The Basel Tattoo, an annual military tattoo show performed by international military bands, is scheduled for a week from July 14 to 22 in the Kaserne Basel. Based on the British counterpart ‘Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo,’ about 1,000 participants are working at the festival this year. According to the organisers, the proportion of women is 40 per cent this year.

Display teams, popular musicians, and tattoo formations will perform along with the international military bands in Basel, Switzerland.

Basel is a city on the Rhine River in northwest Switzerland and is commonly considered to be the cultural capital of Switzerland.

For the seven-minute show in Basel, around 100 artists will fly in and take almost 50 horses from Oman to Switzerland.

Preparations for the guest appearance in Switzerland are under way and in full swing in Muscat.

Dr Sarhan al Zeidi, Director General at Royal Court Affairs, mentions that a rehearsal arena with the same dimensions as in Basel was specially built.

“We are busy rehearsing and preparing our performance, every day from sunrise to sunset. The artists are particularly looking forward to the trip to Switzerland.” “This trip enables us to promote our work and give Switzerland an impression of Omani culture, and also enables us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between Oman and Switzerland and to appreciate and promote the bond of friendship that exists between the two countries.” Basel tattoo producer Erik Julliard has described the gig from Oman as a major attraction.

In an interview with Blick, a Swiss German-language daily newspaper, based in Zürich, he says, “I am looking forward to working with the Omanis and I am convinced that their performance will be a highlight.” Brigadier General Ramis Jamaan al Oweira, Director-General of Music, Royal Guard of Oman (RGO) promises a fantastic show with which the people will enjoy fully.

In May 2022, the Cavalry performed at a star-studded equestrian show celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s (1926-2022) platinum jubilee. The queen applauded as The Royal Cavalry Oman performed an expert display of horsemanship.

It was then the organisers of the Basel Tattoo became aware of the group and took note of their performance.

Media spokesman Andreas Kurz informs Blick saying, “What is special is that two bands, namely the mounted cavalry and the guard, perform together. What is also special is that wind musicians make music together with bagpipe players and that too on horseback.” The fact that women are in the majority of the cavalry from Oman was not a selection criterion. But it is welcomed when women are strongly represented on stage.

“Basically, we don’t select the formations based on their proportion of men or women. The quality of the product and the variety within the programme are very important to us,” mentions Kurz.
