First Omani mobile app for sign language gets award
Sign language App receives prestigious award for empowering persons with hearing disabilities

MUSCAT: The groundbreaking Omani sign language application, aimed at empowering individuals with hearing disabilities, has been honoured with the prestigious Mada-ALECSO award for the best mobile application benefiting persons with disabilities in the Arab world.
Developed under the guidance of the Small and Medium Enterprises Authority, the 'Sign Translation' app serves as a vital link between individuals with hearing impairments and the hearing community by providing direct sign translation.
Sultan bin Nasser al Ameri, the supervisor of the Omani Sign Translation application, highlighted that the app offers a range of services designed to facilitate seamless communication between individuals with hearing disabilities and those who can speak.
By employing visual communication and simultaneous interpretation, the application boosts the self-confidence of users, creates an interactive communication environment, and ensures the timely and accurate delivery of written and audio content through the expertise of sign translation professionals.
The application caters to individuals with various disabilities, including hearing and visual impairments, as well as those who aspire to learn sign language.
Currently, the app boasts over 3,835 users utilising the simultaneous sign translation service via visual communication.
Furthermore, it has successfully translated over 742 visual content materials into sign language and provided more than 90 printed materials prepared in sign language through the implementation of QR-Codes.
Accessible on both iOS and Android platforms, the application offers institutional subscriptions to avail users with comprehensive services embedded within the app. — ONA
